Last week I was able to get together a large group of iPhone Developers and I took the opportunity to question them on the newly announced iPad. Firstly a quick show of hands identified that approximately 30 of the group already had iPhone OS applications on the Apple AppStore, some of which had multiple apps. Cool... this was my starting point and a way to gauge actual community feeling.
All of these developers were excited by the iPad and the mood amongst the group, was that this could be the start of a new app 'gold rush'. Over 90% were already looking into extending their current applications for iPad, rather than relying on the pixel-doubling facility within the iPad and over 50% of them indicated that they were looking at brand new application ideas that took advantage of the device. Obviously none were happy to divulge the direction of their ideas... funny that eh ;-)
At this time it seems that there are those out there that believe the iPad wont be a success, but I'm totally sure that once this device hits the store and folks can hold & interact with the device, adoption will be rapid. Added to that the support of the iPhone Developer Community, whom have invested a lot of time, money & effort in creating 140,000 applications... creating some even cooler apps that most of us have not even begun to think about!
In the Enterprise, I'm already sold on the iPhone as a great mobile device, but I also understand that the size can also be a limiting factor. What I mean by that is the limited screen size can make certain applications either too hard to implement or impossible (though there is an rule that states, mobilizing an application is not just based around screen real estate, but the way it is designed and implemented). The increased size of the iPad compared to the iPhone, will bridge and ease that gap and I can see Enterprise adoption just as good as public adoption. You can rest assured that Management & Security of the iPad will be taken care of just as the iPhone has.
Now we have to wait until late March, for the shipping of the Wi-Fi models and April for the 3G models... but for sure the excitement is growing in the iPhone Application Developer world!
